The Lazy Girl’s Saviour: Dry Shampoo. A Comparison.
I love dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is the lazy girl’s saviour! I try and not over wash my hair because it is fine and prone to damage (so any unnecessary friction is bad). I do feel super un-fresh when my hair isn’t clean however, because it gets oily at the roots and looks super flat when dirty. Oh the dilemma! That’s when dry shampoo comes in 😉

Why wash your hair, when you can do this?!
Dries up oily roots, give volume and freshness! Bingo! Now it may surprise you – but not all dry shampoos are created equal. There’s cheap dry shampoos (Target’s own brand and Batiste) to the super luxe (Kevin Murphy and MoroccanOil). The two I have been testing out are mid-range and don’t break the bank at least (which could happen if you are super lazy and use it a lot haha) 😛 Klorane’s Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk comes in at $14 for 150ml (but you can usually find it for a less on promotion). Toni and Guy’s Sky High Dry Shampoo is $16 for 250ml.

I’ve been using the Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk for agggges. It is such a staple in my bathroom. I went all DIY for a while, using rice flour as dry shampoo, but I always go back to Klorane eventually! What makes this dry shampoo good is that it doesn’t use talc but instead, rice starch. The reason I used rice flour as my DIY dry shampoo instead of baby powder (talcum powder) is because it’s finer and less drying. I believe this is the reason Klorane’s dry shampoo is so good also. It soaks up oil magically, without drying out my scalp. It is light coloured, but this doesn’t bother me as I have light coloured hair. It gives me great volume without OTT grittiness. I love that it doesn’t have an over powering scent – it’s kinda powdery and soapy, which leaves me feeling clean! The scent also fades with time, in case you aren’t a fan. The added oat milk in the formula is supposed to be ‘protective’ and while I can’t attest to this attribute, any goodies in the formula make me happy 🙂

There is 1 Klorane dry shampoo sold somewhere in the world every 10 seconds – that’s a pretty good stat!
Klorane also have a dry shampoo which contains Nettle, as it is extra absorbent and so it is great for very oily hair. There is also a new ‘coloured’ dry shampoo with oat milk, specially formulated for brunettes.
Toni and Guy’s Sky High Dry Shampoo, promising hair with lots of volume! While the instructions on the Klorane dry shampoo, instruct to spray the shampoo only onto the roots, Toni and Guy’s version directs you to spray the dry shampoo on your hair from roots to tips.

What works with this dry shampoo is that the particles of the dry shampoo are super fine. A friend of mine who is a dark brunette uses it and it doesn’t appear to leave a ‘white cast’ over her hair which is good news! I am probably a touch more liberal with this dry shampoo than I am with the Klorane, only because I think you do need to use quite a bit to get the same volumising effect. On that note – does it give me more volume than the Klorane dry shampoo? I don’t think so. I think they are pretty even, especially when you use a little more of Sky High dry shampoo. The scent of this dry shampoo is also quite different. It’s a lot sweeter and ‘perfume’ like. This scent actually lingers in your hair, which kind of annoys me. I don’t hate the scent, but it is quite strong, so I feel like it would interfere with my perfume or bother someone with a sensitive nose. I can see how this could be a good thing when you are rushed for time and need to look and smell good quickly, but I don’t know, I’m not sold on it. The other major difference between the two dry shampoos is the starch used. Klorane’s starch is derived from rice, while Toni & Guy’s unfortunately is aluminium (it’s called aluminium starch – a modified food product, which has an anti-caking effect). Cosmetic grade aluminium starch isn’t bad for you or risky (numerous studies have been conducted on this – from inhalation studies, ingestion and skin applications) but I suspect it wouldn’t be the best for the environment. Something from school actually rings a bell (ha!) – I recall being told that aluminium in pressurised cans was bad for the environment and I think it was much more common back ‘in the day’.
So which dry shampoo is my pick? Klorane’s version all the way. I don’t think Toni & Guy’s version is bad, but I think I do get more volume out of my Klorane dry shampoo and I probably use less of it as a result. If you have dark hair however, and find that most dry shampoos either leave your hair with a funny white cast or are ‘heavy’ – you would like Toni & Guy’s Sky High.
Do you like and use dry shampoos beauties? Is it a staple for you like it is for me? 😛 Let me know!
