Reviewing some L’Oreal Goodies; Infaillible Magic Essence Drops, Glow Mon Amour Highlighting D
During one of the last Priceline sales, where makeup was reduced by 40 or 50%, I picked up some L’Oreal makeup out of curiosity. I used to love L’Oreal makeup back in high school. For me it was a ‘fancier’ and more grown up drugstore makeup brand and you know, I was fancy and all that 😜🤗😂😂 As such, the brand is a little nostalgic for me. I decided to try some sort of new products from the brand, in order to broaden my makeup horizons…
I picked up the Infaillible Magic Essence Drops (Brightening Primer Drops) because the primer looks like it has the consistency of a serum and is blue in colour! Curiosity peaked for sure! The Glow Mon Amour Highlighting Drops has a pink base and golden peal shimmer through it. I thought it looked like quite a sophisticated liquid highlighter, also worth trying. The last product is a makeup setting spray. The word ‘glow’ in it’s name caught my eye because I love ‘glow’ – who doesn’t right?! If you’d like to hear more about these products, keep on reading ☺️

So first things first. I generally don’t use a dedicated makeup primer when wearing makeup (or foundation more specifically). I don’t find that makeup primers make my makeup last longer or look better. The only primer I have come to like is the Tatcha Silk Canvas It’s not perfect – but it helps to minimise pores when they seem to be extra large or open (when it’s very hot and humid) and helps skin look extra smooth and beautiful, especially under matte or long wearing foundations. I like that it works as a ‘protective layer’ between the skin and foundation. Besides the Silk Canvas, I think primers are just not necessary, especially when you apply a dedicated sunscreen under your foundation (otherwise, there’s too many layers and sunscreen is much more important than a primer). But a blue liquid makeup primer?! How interesting…. gimmicky? Maybe? 😉
After noticing that the makeup primer drops are blue, you’ll notice that there is fine shimmer in the formula. It’s super, super fine but in the bottle they do stand out. Secondly, the texture and consistency is very thin – almost like water. The primer drops melt into the skin very, very quickly and I think this is thanks to the alcohol in the formula evaporating. The alcohol isn’t that much of a problem for me because I do think it evaporates almost immediately and there are good hydrating ingredients in the formula to offset any drying effects you might expect from the alcohol (glycerin and sodium hyaluronate specifically).
Does the blue tint translate onto the skin. No 😅 It pretty much disappears upon application. The shimmer in the formula is almost undetectable on the skin. Does it brighten and make the skin look less shallow/tired? I don’t know. I’m leaning towards saying no. If it does, the effect is minimal. If you apply foundation on top of the primer drops (as you are supposed to – it is a makeup primer after all) then you can’t see any effect left by the Magic Essence Drops. Does it make my makeup look fresher or last longer? Also no lol… I struggle to see what this product does. I think to get anything at all out of the drops, you would have to apply them to bare skin and leave it at that (going makeup free).
The Magic Essence Drops don’t leave a sticky residue on the skin which is a plus (so this claim is legit!) but you can feel that these is something on the skin. It’s almost like you’ve applied a super light serum. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly hydrating but it isn’t drying either. It’s very much a ‘meh’ product for me. Great in theory, but non-existent in delivery lol! If you find that you need a makeup primer underneath your foundation and hate the texture of traditional makeup primers, then this might do the trick for you. I also didn’t find that the drops break me out or make me more oily during the day. The product is dispensed via a dropper and the bottle is glass, which is surprising.
The primer does sit well under all different types of foundation but this could be because the product pretty much disappears when applied to your skin – and it is incredibly light. I think that maybe L’Oreal were going for a skincare-makeup hybrid type of product with this creation, but it just doesn’t deliver either on the makeup side of things or skincare (hydrates skin for 24 hours? No).
Do the drops have a scent? It has a very very faint scent – nothing that’s OTT or very noticeable. BUT some noses may pick up a slight alcoholic scent. Again, it’s super, super slight and faint. After application, no scent is detectable.
Would I personally repurchase these drops? No. But I will try and use them up on makeup free days for a boost or something 🧐🤨 The Infaillible Magic Essence Drops retail for $31.95 AUD (not cheap right…) but you should be able to pick them during a sale or promotion at Priceline for around $20 AUD.

(F.I.L. B228041/1).
I really like using liquid or cream highlighters. There definitely look more natural on the skin. I’m also a fan of the ‘dewey’ almost wet look on skin and you can achieve this much more easily using a cream or liquid highlighter. The L’Oreal Glow Mon Amour liquid highlighters come in two shades; 01 Sparkling Love (a champagne gold) and 04 Melon Dollar Baby (a pink base with pale gold reflects). In some places online Melon Dollar Baby is called Melon Berry, I don’t know why. I HATE it when there are different shade names and colours for different regions and countries in the world, but that’s another story…. I chose Melon Dollar Baby because I thought it looked more unique than the champagne gold shade. Melon Dollar Baby does look very pink in the bottle, so I thought it would be very ‘brightening’ also.
Firstly, the texture of this liquid highlighter is much thicker than the Magic Essence Drops. It also comes in little glass bottle with a dropper applicator. Because the product is thicker, the dropper seems to struggle to pick product up and then deposit it. You can only get a little bit of product at a time. This is fine in the beginning, but I assume that once you are left with less and less product in the bottle, it becomes harder to dispense. It hasn’t been thought out very well.
The texture of the liquid highlighter is very, very emollient because it has an oil base (coconut oil). It’s incredibly slippy and shiny (the complete opposite to say the Becca Skin Perfector). The gold reflects in the formula are very small and subtle, so it is a sophisticated and more natural highlighter. What gives it it’s ‘oomph’ is the oil base. Some Beauties will hate this though – when it’s mixed into your foundation, you can’t totally set the foundation even with powder – your foundation will naturally move around a little bit. For Beauties who are fans of dewey skin and maybe even very dewey skin, this is a plus but for others it will be a negative. Tapped lightly on top of your cheekbones you get a lovely wet skin look. Don’t use too much or else your foundation underneath will move around.

Above, I’ve applied a LOT of the Glow Mon Amour Highlighting Drops to the back of my hand, so you can see the tone and colour of the product. It is sheer with a level of transparency in the colour.
I haven’t found that the highlighter breaks out my acne prone skin (coconut oil can very comodegenic) but I also don’t use it everyday. I’d be wary to use it everyday because of this.
Another important note to make is that the highlighting drops smell very strongly of watermelon. I don’t think it’s unpleasant but it is strong so it may bother some Beauties especially as it’s a face product (understandably so – it’s not a very ‘natural’ scent either). If you think it may be a problem for you, make sure you smell a tester in a drugstore to see if it will bother you.
I think L’Oreal claims for this highlighter hold up true – it’s very subtle yet noticeable enough to give you a natural and sophisticated glow. Perhaps the champagne gold colour would have been better for my skin tone but I can still get away with this shade. It’s a nice product but I probably won’t repurchase it (unless I can pick it up for cheap in the champagne gold colour). The Glow Mon Amour Highlighting Drops retail for $29.95 AUD but during a promotion at Priceline, you should be able to pick it up for around $18 AUD ✨

A hydrating makeup setting spray (mist) at drugstore prices? Count me in! I just had a good feeling about this mist ☺️ And you know what… I was right!
When you spray the mist onto your skin, you get a very refreshing sensation – I wouldn’t say it feels cold or ‘cooling’ but it’s refreshing (some would argue that most mists are refreshing and this is a good point…). The mist is very fine and you can easily control how much you apply onto your skin. It’s very hard to go overboard with this mist. The mist automatically takes away any powderiness on the skin. It helps all your makeup ‘layers’ to infuse and look like ‘one’. Overly powdered skin looks dry and hence older than it is.
The mist certainly doesn’t impart any shimmer or sparkles on your skin (thank goodness for that!) but I did expect it to leave skin dewey. Does it leave skin looking dewey with some shine? Not really… makeup looks fresh and better because any obvious dryness left by powders on the skin magically disappears, but your skin won’t look dewey all of a sudden. This I admit is probably a very big plus. It makes this makeup setting spray very versatile especially for different skin types. Skin is left looking more refreshed and alive without the addition of shimmer or shine.
Again this makeup setting spray contains coconut water and oil. It doesn’t break me out, but like I mentioned above, I don’t wear makeup every day and hence don’t use this setting spray daily either. It certainly doesn’t leave your skin feeling or looking oily. I like that the ingredients contain vitamin C, but I don’t expect it to do much applied to the skin over makeup (it won’t get into the deeper layers of the dermis in order to be active) but the advantages of the spray aren’t marred by this in my books.
The 24 hour hydration or radiance claims that L’Oreal puts on so many of it’s products (this one included; ‘Get a healthy glowing complexion for 24 hours’) is a bit ridiculous, so you certainly have to take these claims with a grain of salt. Did the mist make my makeup last longer as we expect from setting sprays? I think it helps makeup look better and more unified, perhaps extending it’s wear a little, but it doesn’t have the power of say Skindinavia makeup setting sprays (used by dancers and performers). That’s ok, I think it does a great job for it’s price point and as a makeup setting spray, helping you look even better when you are finished doing your makeup – bonus!
The Shake & Glow Luminous Setting Spray retails for $23.95 AUD. You can pick it up at Priceline during one of their promotions for around $15. You get 90ml of product and it’s housed in a light plastic bottle. I was really surprised at how much I liked this makeup setting spray! The makeup setting spray doesn’t have a very strong fragrance. It’s fruity but very, very subtle. Another bonus!
So out of the three products what are my final thoughts?
Infaillible Magic Essence Drops: More of a gimmick than anything else. I won’t be repurchasing it.
Glow Mon Amour Highlighting Drops: Lovely product but it does have a (coconut) oil base – so you have to be a fan of the dewey look with this one. Leaves a sophisticated shine on the skin – no garish glitter or metallic base in sight ✨ I would consider repurchasing this product in another shade.
Shake & Glow Luminous Setting Spray: Great universal makeup setting spray. Leaves the skin looking fresher, makeup more unified and polished. I’d repurchase this product or recommend it.
And that wraps things up Beauties 💋 Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products or would consider purchasing one of these ☺️🛍✨
