Review: True NARS Lip Pencil Set

I wasn’t sure whether or not to do this review because this set of lip pencils (or crayons – whichever word you prefer) from NARS is limited edition. I decided for it eventually, because not only do I loooove these pencils but both sets are still available at Mecca Cosmetica (and Maxima) in Australia. I hadn’t tried NARS’ lip pencils/crayons before this set (though I heard lots of great things about them) but if I’m honest it’s the box which really drew me in… I mean come on, how can the colours not draw you in?!

P1050008

NARS has released two different sets of lip pencils (3 pencils in each set) and I do believe these were released in the US as a Nordstrom exclusive, as part of their birthday sale. The Ultimate NARS Lip Pencil Set contains two milky pink shades and a nude, which to be honest didn’t attract me at all, while the True NARS Lip Pencil Set looked right up my ally, combining a bright fuchsia pink, a bright raspberry red and a matte brick red lip crayon.

Yu is the bright fuchsia pink lip pencil and it has a satin finish. It is soooo creamy and opaque, that it glides onto the lips super smoothly and packs a punch of colour with one swipe of the lip pencil. Yu is one of those pinks which I believe most people could get away with wearing, because it isn’t to cool or to warm – it is literally just in the middle of both, so just right 🙂

The second lip pencil which also has a satin finish is Luxembourg. This shade is a raspberry red and the formula is just as perfect as Yu. Both of these shades are permanent, so even if you can’t get your hands on this specific set, you should be able to get one of these two colours relatively easily. The formula of the satin lip pencils is very hydrating, glossy and they feel wonderful on the lips.

The only matte lip pencil in the set, Provocative Red, is a limited edition shade. It’s a medium toned brick red and I’m so glad to have this colour in my arsenal, because I don’t own anything like it in my collection. It’s probably not a shade I’m automatically drawn to (a bright red like Luxembourg is!) however, it’s very sophisticated and surprisingly, easy to wear. Because it isn’t a shade which screams for attention, it’s a great colour to wear to work and a great colour for fall.

Even though Provocative Red isn’t as smooth as say the satin lip pencils (it doesn’t have the same ‘slip’) for a matte lip product, it is remarkably smooth and pigmented, without being to thick in consistency. It perhaps catches onto dry lips a little (like all mattes) but not terribly. It doesn’t go on patchy and it isn’t to dry because of it’s thiner texture. It is still pigmented and for a matte lipstick, wears comfortably.

The gorgeous box almost looks like it has a glass top, but really it’s just plastic (practical). It looks like watercolour paints have been splattered underneath it, and a beautiful organic design has been created. Inside the box you have three slots for your lip pencils to sit in. I tried to pop the plastic insert out, but my efforts weren’t going to well. It would be great to be able to use the gorgeous box for other purposes also. I’ll ask my brother to see if he has any ideas about how to get it out (without destroying the box) as he seems to be good at figuring stuff like that out. If I find a way to get it out, I will let you know 🙂

Each NARS Lip Pencil set retails for $72 AUD. That works out to be $24 a lip pencil. That’s a bargain, because the pencils usually retail for $39 each (I was surprised at how much they cost actually – compared to the price of $26 USD!). The lip pencils in the sets aren’t minis either – they are full sized lip pencils. Both sets are still available from Mecca Cosmetica (online) and I believe some stores should also still have them in stock (you can check online which stores are still carrying them).

I highly recommend the True NARS Lip Pencil Set and I’m sure that I will have to try some other colours from both the satin lip pencil line and the velvet matte line. I can’t wait to wear Yu and Luxembourg this spring and summer! 😀 Let me know if you end up getting a set for yourself 😉

Have you tried any of NARS’ lip pencils? Are you a fan of lip crayons in general?

Until next time,

Beauty Bee~
