Review: Tatcha’s Camellia Beauty Oil

Ah face oils! I’ve been quite hesitant in trying out face oils despite the latest craze, because that’s what I thought it was – a craze. There was no way in universe that I was going to slather myself top to toe in coconut oil lol! The furthest I got was using jojoba oil (which isn’t even really an oil!) in the evenings and some rosehip oil mixed in with my foundation to achieve a dewey finish. I surprised even myself, when I decided to buy Tatcha’s Camellia Beauty Oil. To be honest, it was because it looked so indulgent and beautiful! It’s a Camellia oil blend and very often, blends will be lighter than pure oils. I was determined it give it a go and I’m so glad it’s found a place in my routine!

Camellia seed oil (camellia japonica seed oil) is the star ingredient in this oil. Camellia flowers bloom in winter and grow native to Japan. The oil has been used for centuries on the skin and hair of Japanese women (in particular). The oil from the seeds is quite light but deeply nourishing. It’s easily absorbed by the skin because it’s molecular weight is almost an identical match for our skin. It contains a high concentration of oleic acid (a fatty acid), vitamins A, B, E and D, plus Omegas 3, 6 and 9. Fatty acids help to moisturise skin and also help it to maintain its elasticity (it prevents the breakdown of collagen and stimulates the production of new collagen in the skin). Luckily, antioxidants and anti acids work synergistically to help reduce inflammation. For that reason, I love that this oil also uses green tea leaf extract, algae extract, and rice bran oil (Tatcha’s famour Hadasei-3 Complex – antioxidants). Reducing inflammation is really important, especially when you are suffering from hyper-sensitive skin or breakouts. That redness is a sign that your skin is in distress and needs a protective barrier stat (one which will not cause more damage but will provide soothing emollients).

Not only is the formula great, you can see that it also contains 24 karat gold flakes! Tatcha do like their gold and it makes their products even more luxurious! I wanted to capture for you, how the gold sparkles in sunlight 🙂

Thanks to it’s antioxidants, it’s a fantastic product to use in your morning routine. Yes, morning! I never ever expected to try to use an oil during the day (most people do not want to become shiny from the get go), but because this oil also uses macadamia, squalene, rice germ oil and capric triglyceride (derived from coconut oil), it also feels like a dry oil upon application! It really does feel light and as long as you use the oil in moderation, you shouldn’t feel like your face is oily.  Two to three drops is plenty for one application. Tatcha recommend massaging the oil into clean skin, however in the mornings, I tend to use it over the top of my vitamin C serum, ‘patting’ it into my skin. If I’m at home and feeling ‘minimalistic’ (aka lazy!), washing my face and then massaging the oil into my skin is all that I need. For regular days out, I still layer a moisturiser over the top of the oil (vitamin C serum – Camellia Beauty Oil – moisturiser).

As I said, it feels incredibly light but gives my skin that added glow and translucency, which makes it a perfect base under makeup. I don’t feel like there are to many layers on my face when I do this. If you have very oily skin, you might want to buy and try out the travel sized version of this product first. I also don’t experience any breakouts from this oil and I’m quite paranoid when it comes to breakouts (as I had bad skin when I was younger). I will note however, that my skin is quite ‘stable’ these days.

Because so little of this oil is needed, it will last me forever! You can of course also use it on your hair, body (especially the delicate chest area) and hands. If you are really unsure on how to introduce an oil into your routine, check out my Skincare 101 post on just that 😉

Ingredients:

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Squalane (Olive Origin), Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Fragrance (Natural), Polyglyceryl-10 Pentaisostearate, Dimer Dilinoleyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Phytosteryl Macadamiate (Macadamia), Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Oil, Water, Tocopherol, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate (Licorice Extract), Oryzanol (Rice Bran Oil Extract), Inositol (Rice Extract), Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Alcohol, Glycerin, Algae Extract, Gold, Phenoxyethanol.

Formulated without: Mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, PEGs, PPGs, DEA, TEA, urea or phthalates.

It is of course made in Japan and the quality of the oil does make it a little expensive ($95 USD). I do think it is worth the price if you can allow to treat yourself! I would also recommend that you keep the oil somewhere dark and cool, away from moisture so you can keep your oil as fresh as possible.
