Review: Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother 💫

I’m a big fan of Olaplex and their amazing bond fixing & strengthening No. 3 Hair Perfector Treatment. Their technology is revolutionary and I really enjoyed using their extended line of products, including the Bond Maintenance Shampoo & Conditioner. When Olaplex released a Bond Smoother styling cream (utilising the same bond strengthening technology as the original treatment) of course I wanted to try it and put it to the test! 😏 I think I have the perfect hair to test these products out; It’s very fine, colour treated, prone to damage and breakage. Growing your hair long when you have such fine hair as mine is tough. Really tough. So when a product can actually repair broken hair bonds, it is ground breaking. But does every product utilising this relutionary technology and formula work well? Let’s talk about the Bond Smoother styling cream in more detail ☺️

1. Apply a very small amount to damp or dry hair, concentrating the product on your mid-length to ends.

2. Comb through and style as desired.When to Use

I want a styling cream to leave my hair manageable, silky, soft and strengthened (protecting it from heat but also by coating it in either silicones and oils to make  the hair shaft thicker and more resilient). I think my expectations of a styling cream is quite universal. Of course, having the addition of ‘working’ (keeping smooth and fizz-free) for 72 hours is also impressive. I should note, that while my hair is prone to breakage and damage, I don’t really experience frizzy hair (lucky me maybe, but I have other problems don’t worry lol) so I won’t be able to test the Bond Smoother in regards to it’s frizz fighting powers.

The first thing to note about this hair styling cream, is that it combines a lot of hair silicones together. I don’t mind this because silicone protect hair and make it silky and manageable. However, some silicones are harder to wash out than others (shampoo containing SLS will generally wash out all silicones) but they can start to weigh down the hair if used too much. From the list above, the following two silicones are used in the Bond Smoother styling cream; dimethicone & phenyl trimethicone. Bother of these silicones are not water-soluble, which means they can build up on your hair and need to be washed out using an SLS shampoo. This doesn’t bother me too much as I have a mix of shampoos at home and most do contain SLS. I also don’t find that washing the styling cream out of my hair is a problem.

However… I find this styling cream has an odd texture. It’s a very thick, stodgy cream. I use about a chickpea size/amount, for my shoulder length hair. When I smooth the product into my hair, it’s difficult to know if I’m coating my hair evenly. It disappears and ‘absorbs’ into hair very easily and quickly, but sometimes I get the feeling that because of it’s texture, it isn’t spreading across my hair very well. If that makes sense. I use my styling cream on freshly washed but slightly damp hair. If I use only a small amount (the size of one little singular chickpea!) my hair feels weightless and dries nicely (I air dry my hair till it’s about 70% dry and then finish off the drying process by using a blow dryer for a short amount of time). However, I wonder if it distributes through my hair evenly and well, because once it’s dried off and all ‘finished’, I don’t get the silky smooth hair feeling like I get using other styling creams. That weightless feeling is great and my hair is left soft, it’s just not quite as silky and shiny as I would expect.

The other problem I have with this styling cream, is that if I’m tempted to use more product in my hair, it quickly weighs it down (even if it’s spread only through the lengths of my hair). My hair is left looking flat and oily despite, the cream not going anywhere near my scalp. For this reason, I think it’s a very ‘temperamental’ styling cream. I’m sure the cream protects my hair and helps to strengthen it, but I just wish I could a) use more of the cream without worrying about the fact that my hair will look flat and weirdly oily, and b) I wish it left my hair more silky and shiny (it’s the exact opposite of a styling cream like the Jeval Smooth It! Argan Oil Infused Smoothing Cream; I can use A LOT of that styling cream and my hair never feels weighed down. It’s left smelling delicious and looks shiny and healthy to boot 🌟).

The Bond Smoother will last you a loooong time, seeing as you are recommended to only use a small amount (and you must use a small amount unless you want to weigh down your hair) despite the bottle looking small (it contains 100ml of product). The scent is ok too – it’s an ‘Olaplex’ kind of scent, but I find this one to be very ‘perfumey’ and synthetic. I’m not a fan of it.

I really wanted to love the No. 6 Bond Smoother, but it’s just not for me. I think it’s created for those of us that have thick hair that can take the ‘weight’ of the creams texture and silicones (plus oils; the formula also contains grapeseed and coconut oil). I wouldn’t recommend it for fine-haired beauties. It’s also a shame because those of us with ‘weak’ hair need that extra strengthening power afforded by the ‘Olaplex’ bond smoothing and repairing magic! 💫 Olaplex has released a styling and smoothing hair oil (No. 7 Bonding Oil) which might be more suited to my hair’s texture and needs. I just need to somehow use up my Bond Smoother cream before buying another styling cream/oil 😅 I’ll see how I go…
