Review: Maybelline The Falsies Volum’ Express Waterproof & Some Beach Inspiration
Before I begin, why did Maybelline decide to leave off the e in volume? I just noticed that so I had to mention it because it strikes me as very odd slash stupid. Anyways, a waterproof mascara is a must in summer or if you live in a very humid and hot climate. Good waterproof mascaras are hard to find. I picked this one up at the chemist (pharmacy) just randomly before going on my weekend getaway and wasn’t expecting much – except that it was to stay put at the beach. The last thing you want at the beach or pools is to worry about fixing up any stray makeup. In the great outdoors makeup should be minimal, almost untraceable, so smudged mascara just won’t do!

So what do I think of it? It’s ok. Pretty much what I expected. It’s not better than my non-waterproof mascaras. It separates lashes nicely, makes them longer and darker. I have yet to find a waterproof mascara that does give great volume. I have to give it extra browny points for the fact that you can add many coats of the mascara without your lashes going ‘crunchy’. That’s a great plus! When I wore it to the beach it stayed put. Didn’t budge. But once I got home after maybe 6 hours of wearing it out, I took a nap and when I awoke, the mascara had smudged ever so slightly under both eyes. I’m not sure if I had been rubbing my eyes during my nap? I tried it out again the day after and the same thing happened – after 6 to 8 hours it smudged slightly under my eyes. The most important thing is that it didn’t smudge at the beach or while I was out.

The brush is slightly curved, but otherwise it’s pretty standard. The wand is quite flexible/bendy which is interesting. I’m not sure you need to bend the brush while applying the mascara to your lashes but it is handy for removing excess product off the wand. The brush isn’t huge but it isn’t one of those minuscule brushes either. It was really hard trying to get my camera to focus on the wand so I tried another camera and the same thing happened – it would focus on anything but the wand (even on the grains of sand)! So hopefully from these pictures you get a good idea about what you would be getting.

This mascara retails for about $20 here in Aus. Do I think it’s worth the price? No. I would give maybe $10 for it? So it’s definitely not a holy grail product for me. It’s not terrible by far, but it could be improved. I like the packaging, it’s practical and the colour of the tube is bright and fun without destroying your retinas. I think over the course of our Australian summer I will be testing lots of waterproof mascaras, so I will keep you updated on other formulas and how they match up next to each other so stay tuned! Do you have any favourite waterproof formulas? Let me know because as I said, I’ve never found an amazing waterproof mascara so the more hints to make my journey easier the better 😉
For those of you in cold/winter climates, I thought I’d share some sunshine and sand with you!
