Review: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
A lip sleeping maks?!? Yep – I know what you’re probably thinking, that this is a product which is totally a gimmick – and while there’s probably something to that (the name perhaps?) it’s still a lovely product so hear me out!

I first found out about this product thanks to Paris over at My Women Stuff and I was of course intrigued, since I’m quite a fan of regular sleeping masks now! Laneige is a Korean brand which is quite trusted both in the makeup and skincare world. It’s a product which looks like a potted lip balm, however as it contains some exfoliants within the formula, it’s marketed as a night care product, which you don’t take off (hence the sleeping part). Here is what Laneige say about what the product will do for you:
An innovative Lip Care Mask that creates all-day smooth, firm lips by softly melting dead skin cells on the lips while you sleep and relives troubles that could not be solved with moisturising lip balm alone. A berry mix complex containing four types of berries provides the lips with rich vitamins and offers antioxidant effect, for smooth firm lips. Laneige moisture wrap technology helps purify damage and stress from frequent lip makeups and provides deep moisturising components to maintain moist, soft lips. Before going to bed, apply a thick layer of mask onto the lips and gently wipe off with a tissue the next morning. The lips will feel exfoliated and gently cared for.
I had to fix up some of the bigger grammatical errors in the description above, I just couldn’t help myself 😛 But it sounds like a lovely description, no?

It does most of all, moisturise the lips with a whole host of emollients, from glycerin, shea butter, murumuru butter (a plant butter from the Amazon) and candelilla wax (a shrub native to the US and Mexico). The exfoliant in the product comes from the wild raspberry extract, which also acts as an antioxidant. The other berries in the ingredient list are blueberry, cranberry and strawberry. There’s also arabica coffee extract in the formula, which probably helps with circulation and anti-inflammatory properties. The ingredient list is quite interesting and another reason why I wanted to try the product for myself!
It’s texture is like a thin waxy balm, which is very emollient and easy to pick up. It’s not sticky and it is mostly transparent. It has the most delicious berry-bubblegum scent, which I personally love (it reminds me of being a kid!).

The lip sleeping mask does work like a lip balm. It does soften dead skin, so it’s easier to remove, but I don’t find it exfoliates as well as it does moisturise. It’s a great way to remember to apply lip balm before bed, but you could just as well use this lip sleeping mask during the day. I don’t find that I have a layer of mask left on my lips in the morning, but this could just depend on how you sleep and how dry your lips are. The best way to use the mask is to exfoliate your lips first with a lip scrub (either a bought one, like the Lush Popcorn Lip Scrub or a DIY lip scrub made of honey and sugar) and then apply the lip sleeping mask. When you give your lips a good scrubbing beforehand, the lip mask is able to penetrate the skin on your lips better and leaves them silky soft.

I’ve received lots of questions on how the Laneige lip mask compares with Nuxe’s Reve De Miel lip balm. The Reve De Miel lip balm is much thicker in consistency and has less ‘slip’. They are quite different products. I’ve found that perhaps the Lip Sleeping Mask is a touch more nourishing.

L to R: Nuxe Reve De Miel and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
The Lip Sleeping Mask also comes with a little spatula, but I lost it almost instantly 🙁 It’s super cute and will be useful for those who don’t want to use their fingers when scooping out the product out of the little pot. The little pot looks like frosted glass, but it is plastic (lighter and more travel friendly). While I’m not totally sold on the idea that this product is a ‘mask’ in the traditional sense, it’s a lovely product which does help to repair sore and dry lips. I will be keeping this little pot on my bed side table for nightly use. I bought my Lip Sleeping Mask from W2beauty for $21.65 USD (free worldwide shipping is included!).
