Going Bananas! The Body Shop’s Banana Truly Nourishing Shampoo & Conditioner 🐒🍌🍌🍌
I love the Body Shops products 🧡💚 But can you believe I’ve never tried their hair care products?! Because my hair is super fine and gets damaged very easily (it’s colour treated, so it is doubly weak) I’m a bit of a haircare snob. I don’t mind drugstore or supermarket shampoos, but I usually stick to salon brands to be safe. Maybe this is why I never ventured into the haircare section in the Body Shop… so what made me try the Banana Truly Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner? The duo’s SCENT! They smell sooooooo good! And I’m not even a banana fan! I eat bananas, but more out of reason than anything else. I also dislike strong banana scents. I just remember as a kid, taking a banana to school, not eating it and it getting squished in my bag. When I would FINALLY take it out, it would be overripe and the scent would linger in my bag until I washed it LOL overripe bananas are not for me. The shampoo & conditioner scent is that of a banana milkshake 🍌🥛 It’s sweet, but not overly so and it’s just delicious smelling. So how did the Body Shop go in regards to performance in the haircare line? Let’s find out!

So the Banana line is targeted for Normal to Dry Hair. I can get oily roots but the lengths of my hair are dry, so in theory this should be a good match for me.

Firstly, I love that both the shampoo and conditioner contains banana puree! 🍌🍌💕 It’s NOT just a banana scent. I didn’t realise until I got home however, that the shampoo and conditioner is formulated without silicones. I’m not against silicones, especially in haircare. There are all different types of silicones and you can get very lightweight varieties that evaporate over time, which means your hair isn’t weighed down and it doesn’t build up on hair strands either (making it difficult to wash out). The reason I’m such a fan of silicones in haircare is because I have damaged, fine hair. Silicone coats hair strands making them not only feel silky and soft, but they also give hair some ‘slip’. Hair is thus more protected and less likely to be rough, so you don’t have to battle your hair as much – it’s more manageable.
At the same time, the Truly Nourishing Shampoo contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS). It’s a great cleanser, but it can be drying and sensitising on your scalp (the particles of SLS are very very small, so they can be difficult to wash off. If you don’t wash it off the skin very well, it’ll be drying and very irritating over time). I do experience a sensitive scalp from time to time and has my hair is generally dry, I’d much prefer a gentler cleanser to be used. If only this duo contained lightweight silicones and no SLS! I’d be SO happy. But this is a personal preference and I acknowledge that.
Besides the above, how do the products perform? The shampoo cleanses very well (SLS *cough cough*) but the addition of banana does make it more gentle and it isn’t a drying shampoo. One shampoo is all I need to get rid of oily roots and styling product build up.

The conditioner isn’t as thick in texture as I imagined. Looking at the bottle, it looks like pureed bananas! But it’s not lol… well it’s not ONLY pureed bananas 😉 The conditioner feels quite light actually. It also spreads amazing well and covers all strands easily. I leave it on for about a minute or two, and then I rinse it off. Hair is instantly hydrated and softer 💦 I do find my hair is more difficult to detangle when brushing (because of the lack of silicones) so I have to use a detangling spray or oil to help give my hair some slip, otherwise I would damage brushing my damp hair (hair is at it’s weakest when it’s wet. Be gentle!) If you have a LOT of hair – this might be an issue.
I love that both the shampoo and conditioner have the same delicious banana scent ☺️🍌🍌💜 It makes me so happy! The scent lingers in your hair for a while even once dry, which again, I love just because it’s so delicious (or delightful as the Body Shop put it – it’s an accurate description!. I do find that although the conditioner gives my dry hair enough moisture and it looks shiny and great – it’s a little heavy for my fine hair. After washing, it’s only slightly more heavy and flatter than usual (no one else but me notices that my hair is slightly more weighed down) but on day two… it gets oiler more quickly and very flat. For all hair types this shampoo and conditioner should work well, with the exception of fine hair.
I’ll still keep using the shampoo and conditioner until I use up both products. They aren’t bad products at all. They certainly don’t turn my scalp into an oil slick and my hair doesn’t look dirty after washing. I just need to use dry shampoo to lift my roots sooner than usual. It’s an easy problem to solve but in the long term, would get expensive (I only use Klorane dry Shampoo lol). I wish this shampoo & conditioner was perfect for me, but it’s not. My dry hair needs more balance and I’d prefer the conditioner contained silicones so that my hair was more protected and easy to brush after washing. They are beautiful products but just not perfect for me.
I love the look of the shampoo and conditioner. The bottles are a durable plastic (that can be recycled) that look pretty fancy I think. But it can be difficult to squeeze the conditioner and get product out (as it’s a little thicker than the shampoo). Over time I can see this becoming annoying.
Where does the Body Shop line of haircare sit on the spectrum in regards to haircare brand status? I would say they are in-between supermarket and salon haircare brands. Both the shampoo and conditioner retail at $14 AUD (each) for 250ml. That’s pretty reasonable. You can also pick up travel sizes of all the shampoos and conditioners (this makes so much sense! Why don’t other brands do this?!?) which come in cute 60ml sizes. You can also pick up most of the shampoos and conditioners in jumbo sizes, 400ml, which is pretty cool too.
I adore the fact that the Body Shop sources it’s ingredients from all over the world but most importantly, they enter into fair trade ingredients with the producers. All Body Shop haircare products are vegetarian and cruelty free.
The Body Shop’s Banana Our much-loved banana puree is organically produced and sourced from expert farmers at El Guabo, who are based in the Macizo del Cajas biosphere in south-west Ecuador. We’ve been working together since 2006, and re-established our Community Trade partnership in 2017.
Would I repurchase the Banana Truly Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner? No. It’s just not made for my very damaged and fine hair. BUT I will try the Banana Nourishing Hair Mask. The shampoo, conditioner and mask make up the Banana haircare range. I’m hoping the mask will be perfect for my tresses and I can then get my banana scent fix! 😝✌️🍌 As soon as I try it, I will let you know what I think of it. I certainly will try more Body Shop haircare products. My interest is still peaked you could say 😉
