Frank Shimmer Body Scrub
Ahhh Frank Body Scrubs… the guys who made coffee scrubs seriously cool. That’s quite a feat when you think about how simple the product is, so props to them – I did a review of one of the ‘original’ scrubs back in the day. I liked the original scrub, I mean who doesn’t love the scent of coffee, but it is rather messy. The Shimmer Scrub is riding on the ‘unicorn’, ‘rainbow’ trend, which man, I should have ridden but anyways… I was interested in the Shimmer Scrub because I like the thought of being ‘responsibly’ shimmery (it just sounds fun doesn’t it) and I read that the scrub has a larger portion of sugar in it, than coffee (read; less messy).

The ratios of the ingredients are great! I would guess the main ingredients of sugar, salt, coffee and mica (the ‘glow dust’) are quite proportionate to each other. The main oil, or ‘mixing agent’ is grape seed oil, which is a really light, lovely oil, which leaves your skin feeling quite soft and moisturised. The scrub looks like wet sand and I think it’s almost a little more ‘moist’ than the original coffee scrub (it is also the second ingredient in the list). Maybe the sugar and salt melt a little, so it feels slightly less abrasive than the original scrub and it adhere’s to your skin a little better (without going everywhere – looking like you were brewing coffee in your bathroom whilst suffering from a spasm). I like that you can apply it to dry skin (a dry skin scrub) and get some serious exfoliation happening, without really irritating your skin. The scrub still has a slight coffee sent, but it’s also much sweeter (coffee with milk anyone?).

Now to the most important detail – the shimmer! Does it stay on your skin, even after rinsing the scrub off your delicious body? YES! If it didn’t, I would have asked for a refund…. and I would have been angry. If you can see from the photos below (and above), the scrub looks a little shiny, but the shimmer particles are really tiny, so it doesn’t blind you or make your bathroom tiles look like a 5 year old went nuts. I quite like that. As a result, the shine left on your skin after rinsing, is really subtle, but it’s there! My theory is that it remains thanks to being ‘imbedded’ in the oil (and oil repels water of course!).

My camera doesn’t pick up the shimmer on my skin after rinsing the scrub off, but trust me, it’s there. Your skin generally looks more toned and better after a good scrub (gets your circulation going, gets all that flaky dead skin cell build up off, so your skin tone looks more even) and so even a little shimmer, would help it to look healthy and bouncy, reflecting light off the surface more easily. That’s a bonus to exfoliation in my books! 🙂

Ingredients: Sucrose (Sugar), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Sodium Chloride (Salt), Coffea Arabica Seed Powder (Coffee), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Fragrance (Parfum), Beta-Carotene, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide. Naturally derived 99%.
I do think it’s a bit nuts that this scrub had a ‘wait list’ in the US (of like 50,00 or something ridiculous) – or was it just an ‘I’m interested’ in the product, let me know when it is released, I dont know…. but I gotta give them credit, that its a good scrub. You do use it up a little more quickly because the salt and sugar melts on your skin (unlike the scrub which is predominantly coffee), so you use more scrub. If you are fickle like I am, this is good, because you get 200g for $19.95. I like the holographic packaging, it is pretty cool (I think its quite 80s – isn’t it funny, that everything comes back around again when it comes to ‘trends’?). The ‘zip lock’ packaging, is also quite manageable and keeps the product fresh (and handy).
The Shimmer Scrub is ‘limited edition’ which is just annoying…. it’s sold out on the Frank website but it’s still available at Mecca. I think it will return for a second (or even third) round on the main website, so don’t fret if you would like to still try it.
While it’s winter and I’m quite covered up most days, it’s nice knowing my skin is all soft and ‘glistening’ with health underneath 😉 At least when I am a little uncovered, I look good even when it’s miserable outside! And that’s what beauty should do – make YOU smile 🙂 So good move Frank, good move….
