Effective Simplicity; MooGoo’s Natural Milk Wash 🐄🐄🥛🌱

If you take a look at my bathroom cabinet, you would not call my routine ‘simple’ lol…. I love skincare and beauty products, so testing new products that take my fancy is a given for me. However, I’ve said many times on the blog that I do crave simplicity (from time to time at least LOL). There’s almost an art to living simply and being happy with what you have. I may not become a minimalist overnight, but small changes really do make a difference. Both for the environment and your hip pocket (read: wallet!). So this is where an unassuming cleanser comes in…. for years and years now, my brother has been ordering and using MooGoo products. MooGoo is what I would call a green beauty or Indie brand. They began producing products in 2005, when Craig Jones (the Founder of the brand) started formulating products from milk to help soothe his mum’s skin conditions. Originally his mum had been using a DIY natural milk based cream made for her cows udders on her Psoriasis affected hands. So Craig being the wonderful son he must be, tried to reformulate the cream so it would still be effective and ‘green’, but less greasy and pleasant to use. And bingo! That’s how the brand was born 🐄😏🥛 The brand has now grown exponentially – my brother used to order MooGoo’s products via their online store because you couldn’t find the products in retail stores. But now you can find the brand in almost all Pharmacies in Australia and even Priceline (a drugstore). The products have very simple ingredients (no crazy long ingredient lists) and green, good for the Earth (and you!) ingredients. I also LOVE that they don’t use the typical marketing polys used by bigger ‘green beauty’ brands – emotive and alarmist language like ‘toxic’ or ‘cancer’. They use ingredients found to be effective but yet are gentle on the skin and environment 🌱🐨💕 They don’t use scare tactics because they don’t need to – the products speak for themselves!

I’d tried my brothers MooGoo products from time to time, but mostly enjoyed using their milk based soaps. Their skincare products always seemed too ‘simple’ and just didn’t catch my attention if I’m honest. I also don’t have any skin conditions like Psoriasis or Eczema…. But then the other day, I was in the shower thinking about how damaging cleansing can be for your skin if harsh cleansers are used, because they will break down and wash away dirt and oil, including the good oils and lipids your skin. These good oils and lipids are needed for your skin to function well (and keep nasties out!). And low and behold there was a bottle of Milk Wash! So I gave it a go on my face (and body) much to my surprise 😉 Keeping reading to find out what I thought of it primarily as a face cleanser!

Our Milk Wash is one of our most popular products. We combine small amounts of 5 different natural cleaners as this can be gentler on skin than one concentrated cleanser. We chose natural cleansers that wash well without drying out the skin. The foaming action isn’t quite as intense as it would if we used a synthetic detergent like SLS (or other common culprits that end in –fate), but we’re happy to make this small trade-off to use more natural ingredients that are healthier for us and the environment. Ever think about what happens to your wash products after they go down the drain? Synthetic ingredients don’t break down into their natural components easily in the water system as natural ones do.We also use a mix of natural skin conditioning ingredients. We don’t use any essential oils that can also trigger reactions, but instead, a blend of Vanilla with the allergy-triggering compounds removed. Because it’s so gentle it’s also a no-tears formulation in children’s eyes. If you are a car mechanic, you may need something a bit stronger, but if you wish to stay clean without stripping the skin of oils, we think this formula is the bee’s knees. Suitable for all ages, body part and skin types.Benefits:
  1. A low-irritant, natural cleanser formula for the face and body

  2. Made with a combination of coconut and glucose based cleansers

  3. Free from harsh synthetic detergents (SLS) that can dry out the skin

  4. Has the same irritation score as water, for even the most sensitive skin

  5. We use a phthalate-free fragrant oil for a beautiful smell without the sensitivity

  6. Free from all synthetic preservatives like Phenoxyethanol or ParabensIngredients

Aqua (H₂O’s Fancy Name), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (Coconut-Derived Cleanser),  Decyl Glucoside (Glucose-Derived Cleanser), Lauryl Glucoside (Glucose-Derived Cleanser), Coco Glucoside (Glucose-Derived Cleanser), Glyceryl Oleate (Glycerin Based Conditioner), Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate (Coconut-Derived Cleanser), Glycol Distearate (Emollient), Glyceryl Stearate (Emollient), Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (Guar Gum),  Piroctone Olamine (Olamine Salt), Glyceryl Caprylate (Emollient), Fragrance – Oatmeal (Phthalate-Free).

The first thing you will notice when using the Milk Wash as a face cleanser, is that it has a really lovely consistency and texture; it’s silky and lightly milky in colour. It feels almost like a light emollient gel. If I’m wearing makeup I will use an oil based cleanser to first remove said makeup and then I will use a regular water based cleanser to wash my skin.

Milk Wash is an incredibly light and gentle cleanser. You can really tell that it’s gentler than most cleansers on the market – it foams up ever so slightly but glides onto the skin and washes away so easily and wonderfully 💦 Afterwards, you might even be wondering, did it cleanse my skin? But yes it did! Skin feels clean, it’s just that the cleansing ingredients are so gentle and non-irritating (I’m almost inclined to use the word abrasive…).

I am loving cleansers that are SLS free (sodium laurel sulfate) these days. The reason SLS can be so irritating for sensitive skin in particular (mind you, it can be generally drying on all skin types) is because the molecules of SLS are so small, they get into the membranes of your skins cells. So they ‘hang around’ for a while and are difficult to wash off. When they do get washed off, they take a lot of the GOOD stuff from your skin while they are at it. The lipid barrier is then exposed and prone to irritation. That’s definitely bad news for your skin… The Milk Wash uses five very gentle cleansers and also include glycerin in the formula to put moisture back into your skin (so you’re skin doesn’t feel stripped, instead it’s smooth and comfortable). Milk Wash pairs up brilliantly with my Foreo Luna cleansing device for a deeper clean. The Luna actually creates a lot of foam, despite there not being any SLS in the formula (SLS makes cleanses foam up too). Otherwise, use the Milk Wash on your skin and massage it into damp skin for an effective yet very gentle cleanse. It’s not as hydrating as say, a cream cleanser (if you have dry skin) but it’s certainly not as drying as most foaming cleansers on the market.

Milk Wash is the perfect morning time cleanser, when your skin may have produced some oils and dead skin during your sleep but you haven’t been wearing long-wearing makeup. Cleansing in the morning is a bit controversial when it comes to Dermatologists; some say it really isn’t necessary and a quick rinse using water it all you need, while others believe it can be beneficial for your skin especially if you are applying skincare products to your skin in the mornings. I can’t imagine not cleansing in the mornings only because I know my skin isn’t clean. A few swipes using micellar water and you can see all the dirt and oil that has accumulated over night. Using a very gentle cleanser in the mornings should keep everyone happy 😉

The fact that you can use the Milk Wash all over your body as a body wash, is a serious bonus! It means everyone in your family should be happy using it. The larger sizes of the Milk Wash come in a pump pack, which is brilliant. You can buy Milk Wash in a 100ml size (great for travel and only costs $6.50 AUD), 500ml ($17.50 AUD), 1L ($32 AUD) and 5L bottles ($145 AUD).  The formula is gentle enough to be used by children and I know that males generally love Milk Wash because it is ‘fuss free’. Happy campers all around!

Milk Wash does have a fragrance in the ingredient list, but the fragrance is quite subtle and not made from an irritating synthetic ‘parfum’. It’s has an ‘oatmeal’ scent that is slightly sweet but very fresh and earthy at the same time.

I think MooGoo did an amazing job with this product. Like I said (perhaps using slightly different words) I really thought that a skincare addict like myself would not enjoy using this product. No fancy bells and all…. BUT – not only does it work and work well, I feel good about using it knowing it’s better for the environment and my skin ultimately. I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up again! Or repurchase another Milk Wash for our home once I use up my brothers bottle LOL

MooGoo offers Australian Beauties free shipping on orders over $80 AUD, otherwise shipping is a flat rate of $6.90 AUD. MooGoo ship to New Zealand for only $9.90 AUD.
