Comparison & Review: Sally Hansen’s Mega Shine Top Coat and Ultra Wear Top Coat

All top coats claim to do marvellous things, however what I look for specifically is a top coat which dries my nail polish super quickly, protects my nail polish from ‘dents’ and sheet marks (you will know what i’m talking about if you paint your nails a few hours before bed, only to awake the next morning with lines all over your polish!) and keeps my nail polish on my nails for longer (no chips please!). I always used and loved the Sally Hansen Mega Shine top coat, but last time when I ran out of it, I decided to try a new Sally Hansen top coat – their Ultra Wear top coat. How do they fair side by side? Let’s find out!

What does Mega Shine top coat claim to do?

  1. Extends your nail polish wear time to 10 days

  2. Dries your manicure in 60 seconds

  3. Imparts mirror like shine to your nails

  4. Provides a powerful protective shield that protects your nails from chipping, smudging, cracking, peeling and damaging moisture

  5. Micro-diamond formula adds strength

What does Ultra Wear top coat promise to do?

  1. Extends your nail polish wear time to 10 days

  2. Biotin and Spirulina work to strengthen your nails

  3. Forms a durable and high gloss top coat

  4. Self-levelling formula gives a smooth, even and professional result at home

The main noticeable difference between these two top coats is that Mega Shine promises to dry your nail polish super quickly, while Ultra Wear provides more nail strengthening ingredients through it’s ‘nourishing’ formula.

So which one do I prefer and why? I still rate Mega Shine over Ultra Wear, easily. Mega Shine does deliver what it promises – really shiny high gloss nails which stay chip free for longer. And very importantly to me – my nail polish stays completely smudge free even when I paint my nails a few hours before bed. Ultra Wear is nice, but it doesn’t leave a very high gloss shine to the nails and my nails will smudge if I paint my nails a few hours before bed. The smudging isn’t as bad as if I had not used any top coat, but it doesn’t leave my nails completely smudge free. I have a feeling that this is due to the fact that it doesn’t dry the different layers of nail polish beneath it super quickly. It doesn’t stay ‘wet’ for a long time but just doesn’t seem to dry coloured nail polish especially quickly. I also can’t say that this formula strengthened my nails either.

Mega Shine is a little bit cheaper than Ultra Wear. Though Ultra wear does contain a bit more product than Mega Shine (14.7ml over 12.7) so I guess that evens the price out. Mega Shine still lasts me a few months, so I can’t complain.

Have you tried any of these top coats? What is your favourite top coat? I really like Sally Hansen nail care products, I think they make some very high quality products at a very reasonable prices, so I really look forward to trailing some more of their products!
