A Night Cream that HUGS Your Skin! Erno Laszlo’s Phelityl Night Cream 🌔💫🪐

A little while ago a reviewed a new brand on the blog (a new brand for me that is) Erno Laszlo. I reviewed their Hydraphel Skin Supplement Toner (a hybrid product somewhere between a toner and essence) and I loved it!

I’m happy to reveal that one of the other products I received in my Erno Laszlo ‘gift pack’ (which I bought for myself over the 2019/2020 New Year period, to try out the brand) I also love and am a BIG fan of – their very popular,  Phelityl Night Cream. Let’s get into the review, so I can tell you all about it! 🤗

Phelityl Night Cream HOW IT WORKS Erno Laszlo Phelityl Night Cream is a lightweight night cream with a cult following. This best-loved night cream balances the skin immediately and offers long-term benefits too. Say goodbye to night creams that are too rich or too greasy, and hello to skin that looks good all night, and is still soft and plump the next day. Your skin is left not only more balanced, but also replenished. Your skin’s natural barrier is defended with a clever mix of efficient ingredients that guarantee your skin is soothed, yet gently encouraged to glow. What are the features & benefits of Erno Laszlo Phelityl Night Cream?

  1. Moisturize after toning and prescribed treatments, such as serums and eyecare products.

  2. Gently apply with fingertips, blending upwards and outwards from the middle of the face, then along the neck and decollete.

  3. Use Daily.

One thing you will notice when using Erno Laszlo products, is their ‘no fuss’ yet effective approach to skincare. Because Erno Laszlo was a doctor, his products were all about effective formulas; not fancy packaging or ‘trendy ingredients’. What’s interesting though, is that the brand is also now synonymous with Hollywood Stars thanks to loyal customers such as Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo and Katherine Hepburn (just to name a few!). So when looking at the unassuming, black and white tub that houses the Phelityl Night Cream, I really didn’t know what to expect 🧐

Before ‘digging in’ to the night cream, I looked more closely at some of the main ingredients of the cream. Again, the list of ingredients and main ‘highlighted ingredients’ by the brand themselves, are very well known and well studied ingredients. Some might say ‘simple’ and not very flashy or innovative… I will explain why I don’t see this as a bad thing at all, but actually, a huge positive, further on in my review.

Highlighted Ingredients in the Phelityl Night Cream

Glycerin: A natural moisture magnet blends with essential fatty acids found naturally in our skin to restore skin’s moisture levels — and a glowing complexion

Silicon: A hydrator that helps smooth and fill the look of fine lines that come with dryness.

Cetearyl Alcohol: An essential fatty acid derived exclusively from plant oils and natural waxes, is highly emollient, thanks to its natural oils and fats It’s used to lock in moisture, leaving skin soft and supple.

Full Ingredient List:

Water (Aqua/Eau), Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-8, Cetearyl Alcohol, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil/Huile Minerale), C10-13 Cholesterol/Lanosterol Esters, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, PPG-10 Cetyl Ether, Petrolatum, Ceteareth-20, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Carbomer, Methylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylparaben, Parfum (Fragrance), Benzyl Salicylate, Citral, Coumarin, Eugenol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool, Caramel.

POWERFUL Hydrators 👊💧

Some people may say, why spend a lot of money on a face cream that contains commonly used skincare ingredients? And I’d say, you don’t have to. But if you want to or can, it’s not necessarily money wasted. Why? Well first of all, how ingredients come together in a formula is very specific to each brands manufacturing process. The way ingredients are matched and work together, as well as their concentrations, will give you different effects. So while I love looking into ingredients in formulas and think it’s a good thing to do, because it will help inform you whether or not a product will target your needs and skin concerns, I certainly don’t believe that I know everything their is to know about cosmetic chemistry.

I think there is also a misrepresentation in today’s skincare industry, that well known and studied ingredients aren’t as effective as ‘flashy’ new ingredients. Or actives for that matter. The main focus of the Phelityl Night Cream, is returning your skin to it’s happy pH level and effective and protective hydration. Hydrators and moisturisers may not transform skin in the same ways as actives do, but new studies are starting to show us how powerful they still are for our skin.

In 2019, a study was published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (what a mouthful!) found that applying moisturisers to the skin of elderly ‘patients’ (no actives in sight!) decreased inflammatory markers in the blood! There’s a systemic (whole of body) anti-ageing effect thanks to the use of a basic moisturiser. I found out about this study and the remarkable effects of moisturisers via Lab Beauty Muffin’s blog post (written by the wonderful Michelle).  The thinking is, that when the skin is comfortable and protected, it can spend time healing itself, rather than defending itself from constant stress and damage. Even when something as simple as your skin’s pH level has been disturbed (and this happens even through the use of water on the skin) skin starts to become inflamed.

I LOVE that the premise of the Phelityl Night Cream is brining your skin back to it’s natural and comfortable pH level, as well as using moisturising ingredients that attract and add moisture back into the skin (glycerin, a humectant), softening the skin’s epidermis so it looks and feels smooth (thanks to Cetearyl Alcohol, an emollient) as well as locking in moisture so it doesn’t evaporate (Cetearyl Alcohol and silicones, working as occlusive moisturisers).

My Thoughts & Results

I actually started to use the Phelityl Night Cream back in February, when I also began my journey with hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a pigmentation fighting ingredient. As I am using quite a high concentration of it (prescription only) as well as tretinoin (a form of vitamin A), it left my skin feeling highly sensitised and inflamed. Even though I don’t use my hydroquinone cream all over my face, it’s as if it speeds up the circulation of my skin making it highly reactive and also red. Think sore, angry skin, that’s highly irritable and dehydrated 😣😠 When experiencing such skin sensitivity, you have to be incredibly careful in choosing what products you will be using on your skin. I did not buy my Erno Laszlo skincare ‘pack’ with this in mind (I wasn’t even using hydroquinone at the time and din’t know I would be using it…) so I was VERY nervous applying this cream to my skin, right after using my hydroquinone solution…

The results? Immediately comfortable, soothed and HAPPY skin! 🥰🥰❤️💛 Honestly, I couldn’t believe it… and this is because the ingredient list is full of well loved and well researched ingredients, that are well tolerated by almost all skin types. However, it’s not a night cream that feels like an outdated formula. It’s a thick cream, that feels like a nourishing, hydrating night cream – but – isn’t greasy in the slightest! It doesn’t even leave the skin looking shiny. For this reason, even acne prone skin, young or old, should love this night cream. It could easily and comfortably be used during the day, say in Winter, when your skin is more dry and needs more love 💖💧

The Phelityl Night Cream honestly feels like a hug to me, especially when my skin is so irritated and sore. I love that the cream doesn’t have an overly strong scent – it’s very subtle and ‘creamy’ smelling. It smells like skincare but in a good way lol. It’s not obnoxious or trying too hard 😉

Would I repurchase this night cream? Yes, in a heartbeat! 💗 It is expensive unfortunately… and I think that’s because of the brand name, integrity and history. IF you can afford this one, I highly recommend it! Hydrated and moisturised skin is healthy skin – as soon as skin is dry and dehydrated, skin ageing speeds up and we look older, more tired and unhealthy.

Adore Beauty is the exclusive stockist of Erno Laszlo products in Australia. The Phelityl Night Cream retails for $213 AUD for 50ml. In the US, you can pick up the cream via the Erno Laszlo website for $139 USD. I have certainly fallen for this brand and their wonderful formulas. No wonder Marilyn was a fan! 😝😘😘

That’s it for today’s review Beauties! Have you tried any Erno Laszlo products? Would you pick up this cream? Let me know your thoughts on this review and post in the comments below!
